I believe its been done for MACH so that MACH tasks are hard real time. FOr
hard real time on Linux Rtlinux sits under the kernel and runs as a very
compact realtime microkernel

The GPL gods will now be a little happier with me.

The glibc source rpm distributed with Rough Cuts was actually defective,
and wouldn't let you unpack the entire source. The actual story of how
this came about is best shared over a lot of beer.

In any case, there are replacement binary and source rpms of glibc in
ftp://ftp.linux.sgi.com/pub/test now.

Hi,

I´m new to this list, so please forgive any stupid questions ;-))

I´ve been trying to get an old "Indigo R4000" to run Linux... unfortunaly
without much success. I started out with the "Hardhat-5.1" distribution from the
linux.sgi site. I set up a 2GB disk with a "root" layout under IRIX 4.0.5F and
setup bootpd/tftpd on a Pentium-II-Linux box. So far, so good!

When I try to boot the linux kernel from the "PROM" monitor, I get the
following output:

>> version
PROM Monitor SGI Version 4.0.5D Rev A IP20, Aug 17, 1992 (BE)
>> boot -f bootp()aks-csd:/vmlinux
Setting $netaddr to 134.130.100.90 (from server aks-csd)
Obtaining /vmlinux from server aks-csd

Cannot load bootp()aks-csd:/vmlinux.
Unable to load bootp()aks-csd:/vmlinux: execute format error
>>

Here is the output of the "hinv" command under IRIX 4.0.5:
----------
1 50 MHZ IP20 Processor
FPU: MIPS R4010 Floating Point Chip Revision: 0.0
CPU: MIPS R4000 Processor Chip Revision: 2.2
On-board serial ports: 2
Data cache size: 8 Kbytes
Instruction cache size: 8 Kbytes
Secondary unified instruction/data cache size: 1 Mbyte
Main memory size: 32 Mbytes
Integral Ethernet: ec0, version 0
CDROM: unit 6 on SCSI controller 0
Tape drive: unit 5 on SCSI controller 0: QIC 150
Disk drive / removable media: unit 3 on SCSI controller 0: 720K/1.44M floppy
Disk drive: unit 2 on SCSI controller 0
Disk drive: unit 1 on SCSI controller 0
Integral SCSI controller 0: Version WD33C93B, revision C
Iris Audio Processor: revision 10
Graphics board: GR2-XS24 with Z-buffer
-----------

What could be the problem? Is there a chance to get Linux up and running on
this hardware?

I´d appreciate some tips!

Thanks,

Andreas

You have to load sash first (and probably an IRIX 6.2 or later
sash at that), because the IP20 prom only knows how to load MIPS ECOFF
binaries, not ELF binaries. The newer sash knows how to load ELF.

	sash
	boot -f bootp()aks-csd:/vmlinux

Alternately, you could use some tool to produce an ECOFF executable
from the ELF executable, sufficient to allow the PROM to load it.
(The PROM expects only the most basic information, so such a tool
does not have to be very sophisticated.)

Beyond that, the IP20 is not completely compatible with the Indy
(IP24, IRIX IP22 kernel) and Indigo2 (IP22), although it shares the
same memory controller, and most of the work on Linux/MIPS so far
has been on the Indy. The graphics are often different, and the I/O
controller is an older revision, compared to Indy, which is not
completely compatible. The graphics card you have is also different
from the basic Newport (XL) graphics on Indy, and is probably not yet
supported.

I have been talking with people within SGI about providing
documentation and downloadable firmware for the various graphics cards
and for platforms other than Indy, but I don't yet have final
agreement. Also, some of these machines were built quite a long time
ago (yours was probably built in 1992), so locating some of the
documentation is quite an effort.

This is obvioulsy very good news; would it be possible for SGI to comment
on exactly how they can support us further?

SGI's done a great deal to help us this far, I'm really looking forward t
odoing more SGI/Linux stuff. I see the biggest area where we need help in
getting more hardware supported. That requires getting documentation. I
think it would be great if SGI could allocate someone's time to find said
documentation.

I would love to have something to do with this process. If someone knows
who I should talk to about a job, let me know.

I am working on getting authorization to release more documentation,
as well as fragments of hardware management software and, if possible,
downloadable graphics firmware for those cards which require firmware.
I have agreement in principle, but I need to get agreement on the complete
list of items to be released.

Does the "list of items" include the VPC video hardware? It would be
great to see SGI support Linux as an alternative OS for the VPC.

We are working on incorporating support for the new workstation
products into the standard LInux distributions. However, there
are issues with both graphics and digital media that make it
difficult to release details about the hardware implementation
and interfaces.

Too bad, we might have used a ton of them running Linux for the Clown
project, see www.ccnacht.de and slashdot.org. Friends of Realvideo and
raytraced anymations will get on their cost :-)

For those who still don't know, this night Linux made more Linux history.
We've assembled a cluster of 530 Linux nodes in less than 24h plus additional
administration and server machines. A large fraction of the machines was
loaned by volunteers. Problems solved by the cluster include computing
animations, scientific and mathematical problems that were taking advantage
of the large available memory space, computational power and fail safe
features - we're continuing to compute while we're already disassembling parts
of the cluster. The most important benchmark ran was Linpack which was only
run on the 50 666MHz 21164 Alphas which at this time is still running since
the rest of the cluster was busy with other jobs. Results will be filed for
an entry in the top 500 list.

The price for the sickest idea to use the cluster goes to the cluster version
of a MIDI player using the PCspeaker which right now is playing random sounds
on all Intel machines ...

Hi. Where's the best source of information on getting
Linux running on an Indy? I have been using this URL:

   http://www.linux.sgi.com/manhattan/

When my Indy firsts boots over the net, it dies:

  adv: done running setup
  freeing unused memory
  page fault from irq handler
  $0 ...
  $4 ...
  $8 ...
  $12 ...
  Aiee, killing interrupt handler
Kernel panic: attempted to kill the idle task

This is an 150MH Indy R4400, 64M (if that matters)

You're not crazy, after all Linux is already running on bigger iron and
about to run on Sun's E10000. However you should checkout again what
hardware you actually have on your system. A Challenge L is mostly like
an Indy (which is supported), that is strictly uniprocessor. So
your system either is not a multiprocessor system or not a Challenge L.

Actually, the Indy system is a Challenge S. The Indigo^2 system is
a Challenge M. The Challenge L is the desk-side system and can indeed
support multiple processors.

I can only comment on the model line - not on whether you are crazy or not :)

Slip. Challenge S == "Indy" . Challenge L = deskside (max 8 proc)

Challenge DM = deskside (max 4?)

| a Challenge M. The Challenge L is the desk-side system and can indeed

The hardware is radically different. The only shared item is the cpu,
and even it's used in a fairly different way. indy w/o graphics as
challenge S, etc. is strictly a marketing idea.

It's clearly doable, but you need a whole new set of hardware specs.

same cpu bus, but used differently
hidden gio bus within some cards (not quite the same as indy)
vme
wd95 scsi, not wd93
different ethernet
different serial
different memory/io interface chip, with layered and "interesting"
buses(plural) to various kinds of i/o
interrupts (of course) are quite different, with some interesting
issues in the implementation.

There may still be some old white papers on www.sgi.com

Sorry, I'm out of my mind since the big flu knocked me down during
last weekend's CLOWN cluster event. I was actually thinking
Challenge S.

I do some app. development on SGI boxes, and have found that SGI's
Developer Toolbox is a rich resource for hardware and software
information - including an online copy of SGI's Hardware Referece
manual. You can join SGI's developer program for free by going to
www.sgi.com and following the Developer links. That will give you
access to all of the goodies I've mentioned above.

I'm interested in your progress in this matter. SGI's hardware is very
impressive in terms of CPU, buss and I/O performance - it would be
"interesting" to see Linux on an SMP SGI system.

Good Luck! Uou'll probably need lots of it... :-)

Cheers,
Lyle

Hi,

I'm not sure if I should feel amused or saddened by this
email. I'm not a lawyer, just curious of what would you
be doing in reponse.

Note that:
The facts this email presents are inaccurate:

	1) We don't have any "product" on www.linux.sgi.com
	   just a free source distribution.
	2) His claim is ignoring the fact that "Linux" is
a trademark of Linus Torvalds which may invalidate
any claim to its derivatives by another party.
	3) We use "Hard Hat 5.1" as a humorous way to say
it is somewhat unstable release of Red Hat 5.1
in a casual way in one title.
	4) We never use the term "Hard Hat Linux".

I guess the question is whether our very innocent and casual
use of the phrase "Hard Hat" in one web page and without any
product connotation constitutes trademark infringement.

I believe the installer uses the term `Hard Hat Linux', even on the
RH-sold Rough Cuts CD. We should really rebuild that properly, and I
know Alex was talking about doing just that. puffin?

Hmm. I don't find any such trademarks on a search at the
US Patent Office (http://www.uspto.gov/tmdb/index.html).

Ask him what the trademark registration number is, and
where it is registered...

Did you try Thomson and Thomson? The US Government
trademarks don't cover Canada. Thompson and Thompson
is very expensive but have a near monopoly on the
	worldwide trade-mark business.

The have a web site under the thomson-thomson and a
new service under the saegious(sp) name BUT they charge
$2.50 per hit on any search AFTER you setup and account.

[FYI, regarding that request to erase the "Hard Hat"
words from www.linux.sgi.com -- Ariel]

The suggestion by Joe to check http://www.uspto.gov/tmdb/index.html
proved to be pretty helpful, thanks.

A search revealed no less than 22 parties claiming
"Hard Hat" as a registered trade mark in various
variations. I wrote back to Mr Hilarius (tm of Monty
as Greg suggested :-) telling him that I couldn't verify
his claim in this database (and what I found instead)
and asked for more details.

I also mentioned that AFAIK "Linux" is a trademark
of Linus Torvalds and asked whether he can prove
that he got permission from Linus to use the TM
in his claimed TM: "Hard Hat Linux".

That said, I made it clear that it is not our intention
to infringe on anyone trademarks, and if he could only

Hi,

Is it possible to get a console on the serial port with the hardhat
package ?.

I'm trying to get linux installed on a challenge S, which has no video
board, all goes pretty
well until i get into userland and the kernel wants to open
/dev/console, which i would
like to be a terminal on the serial port, is this possible?

Regards,

Richard Hartensveld

Yeah, that's how I boot my Indy when I need to capture early-on kernel
dumps.
Make sure that /dev/console is a symlink to /dev/ttyS0.

I assume the prom is set correctly, because you're getting this far.

I made a ttyS0 on the nfs-root filesystem and linked /dev/console to it, i
no longer get the
message 'can't open console' but no message at all :). i made the ttyS0
device using mknod ttyS0 c 4 64.

I seem to be forgetting something, anyone who can fill me in here ?

Richard

Hello,

I am sorry if this is an issue stated in a faq or updated document
or something. But, how far are we exactly?
I have an I2 Extreme (R4.4 200).. I doubt I can run linux on it yet.
But, it's an interesting thought. And, well.the webpage
doesn't seem tooo updated :)

Well, I know you are pointing at me, but I really didn't see much
changes that should make their way to the web during last months. But
I'm only following this list, not other linux-kernel's. Did I miss
something?

As for the HW specs, the pages stated for a long time that only Indys
are supported and we've said that on the pages.

Yours,

I guess I should probably interject a point of information on this thread.
Both myself and 2 colleagues at UAB will be extending the port of Linux to
the Indigo2 platform as part of a project funded by SGI to build a Beowulf
cluster consisting of Indigo2's. We are waiting to receive these machines
and intend to begin earnest work after the new year. So I hope we can
contribute a change in the information content of said pages in the near
future.

I had the same problem .. and I really do not remember what I did to make
it go away ..

but here are 2 things to try ..

1> run snoop on your SGI box .. and see what exactly is happening ..
2> try and bootp the unix kernel (IRIX) and see if bootp is setup and
running right ..

another thing I gathered is that there is some NFS incompatibility and we
need to serve the bootp of an intel linux box .. and thus I resorted to
that ..

hope this helps ..

I2 means Indigo2.
Extreme means he has a high-end graphics board.

The I2 is like the Indy, but has two built-in SCSI channels rather
than one. It tends to not have all the multi-media stuff on the motherboard
that you find on the Indy. I have an I2 because - unlike the Indy -
I can put two XL graphics cards in it and run a two-head display.
The I2 also allows for an Extreme card and an XL (but not 2 Extreme's).
Also, can have more memory than an Indy.

Hi,

I'm having problems crosscompiling a kernel for my challenge s (180mhz
R5000).

I had this problem before but lost the solution during a harddisk
crash.

Is it normal that when you configure for a r5k, gcc uses the
'-mcpu=r8000' option?.
When i compile, i get a kernel, only it won't boot.

i am compiling on i386.

Some of you have come up with a fix the last time, only i haven't got it
anymore, anyone that
could help ?

Richard

So, I'm building 2.1.121 that's in cvs using egcs-2.90.27 980315 and
binutils 2.8.1. Both are from Rough Cuts.

Here's the error:

Any ideas on what I should do here? Also, Ralf, are you going to upload
2.1.131 soon?

The Indigo2 sounds a lot like a Challenge S; is the internal architecture
similiar to the Indy/Challenge S as well?

Add -mno-split-addresses to CFLAGS. Your egcs still enables that optimization
by default.

Doesn't matter. GCC 2.7.2 only knew about TFP but not R5k. I choose to
pass -mcpu=r8000 because for the one optimization where it matters the R8000
was the best match for the R5000. Things would be different if we'd use
floating point, but we don't.

Did you get trapped by the -N option bug in ld? Just dump that option from
CFLAGS in arch/mips/Makefile.

Yes. Indigo2 came first, then Indy was done as a derivitive of it.
Indy left out EISA, and changed to an integrated chip for the serial
ports and a couple of other things, as a cost reduction measure.
Indy also has only one scsi controller, while indigo2 has two.
Challenge S was then done as a derivitive of Indy, with the graphics
board replaced by a board with the wd95 scsi controllers, and two GIO
slots (only one of which could do DMA).

Indy, I2, and Challenge-S are all related.
Challenge-S is an Indy (small blue box) with the media stuff removed,
with basically the same motherboard. I don't know for sure whether
it has the extra SCSI channel like the I2. The I2 is a different
motherboard in a larger (than Indy) box. Core chipsets are the same.

What we need to do is make it easy for Linux to determine what
chipsets are attached to the cpu. Bill Earl might have some straightforward
answers. I'm in favor of simply publishing the relevant sections
of Irix bootstrap code. Perhaps Santa Claus can make a code drop this year.

Hello,

I just thought: are we going to port RH 5.2 to SGI? If I understood
Alex well, one of the things that were needed with RH 5.1 was to
recompile all the packages. I could leave my Indy booted to Linux over
holidays and do the compilation if it has some sense. I probably
won't be able to fix serious bugs or develop the installer, but I
should be able to recompile the rpms.

I understand that to build the whole distribution, there needs to be
a person that coordinates the effort. I do not feel like being that
person but if I can help, I'm ready to start.

Yours,

Most of the stuff I've done so far is straight forward rebuilding. Ive
been producing packages as I get time to kick the indy off and test them

:
The main effort required to port Linux to the O2 is the drivers
for a completely new set of hardware devices: The CRIME (graphics)
and MACE (I/O) chips in particular.

The (relativley inexpensive) hardware is not the hard part to get,
What will be needed is mostly hardware specs and I'm not sure
who has access to these and what restrictions are there on them
at this point in time.

:Any information is appreciated...

<personal perspective>

At the time we started with the Indy/Linux port management
considered the UMA architecture of the O2 too innovative to
be widely exposed. With SGI becoming friendlier towards Open Source
(see funding Samba, Linux International, freeware.sgi.com, etc.)
This may change. I just haven't heard anything official about it yet.

Now consider that SGI will be announcing a new Intel based
machine (some people asked about it on this forum before) RSN
According to the public site:

	http://www.sgibreakthrough.com/

The launch is on Jan 11, 1999.

I have an O2 on my desk and I love it -- but:

I would say that since it is an Intel machine and assuming limited
resources it would make much more sense to put Linux on that one,
rather than on the O2; mainly due to a much wider availability of
precompiled and pre-configured software, much larger compatible
installed base and potential contributors, better price/perf, a real
opportinity to bring high-end 3D graphics to the masses, etc.
etc.

Of course, SGI employees cannot comment any further on this yet
unannounced product ... but it *that* one could be "opened"
it would be *really* great (my personal wish).

<end personal perspective>

Isn't that ``Full House'' vs. ``Guiness''? Linux knows that difference since
it is running on the Indy.

OK, start with telling us what steps from the installation
instructions (I assume you are going by
http://www.linux.sgi.com/manhattan/) you did, how you did them and
where did the results start to differ from what you expected.

For debugging during the initiation phase, I recommend to have tcpdump
at hand so that you can check if the packets are running the way they
should.

OK, shall we create ftp://www.linux.sgi.com/pub/redhat/redhat-5.2 and
start putting recompiled "updates" there?

5.2. Self compiled kernels crash when booting.

When I build my own kernel and it crashes. On an Indy the crash
message looks like the following but the same problem hits other
machines as well and there what happens may look completly different.

     PANIC: Unexpected exception

This problem is caused by a still unfixed bug in Binutils newer than
version 2.7. As a workaround, remove the -N flags from LDFLAGS in
  arch/mips/Makefile and relink the kernel.

Please don't use that kernel. Below are instructions how to get current
sources (2.1.121) from CVS which will be a _much_ more satisfying experience.

What the firmware does is about

 - self test
 - hardware initialization
 - execute whatever boot default action is specified like for example
   loading Linux.

The general philosophy is to touch or rely on the firmware is little as
possible. While there are nice firmware implementations out there like
Algorithmics' PMON, some ARC implementations have been found to be very
buggy; also the different firmware implementations are very different
from each other.

There is no fundamental necessity for Linux to somehow be interfaces with a
firmware. On an Indy we only use the firmware to detect the available
memory areas and the Ethernet hardware address. You can as well implement
this by quering a non-ARC firmware, the hardware or by hardware as appropriate
for your platform. As all this code is platform specific you can hide is
somewhere in arch/mips/<your-platform>/.

The source is with you, Luke ...

  4.2. Anonymous CVS servers.

For those who always want to stay on the bleeding edge and want to
avoid having to download patch files or full tarballs we also have an
anonymous CVS server. Using CVS you can checkout the Linux/MIPS
source tree with the following commands:

    cvs -d :pserver:cvs@linus.linux.sgi.com:/cvs login
(Only needed the first time you use anonymous CVS, the password is "cvs")
    cvs -d :pserver:cvs@linus.linux.sgi.com:/cvs co <repository>

where you insert linux, libc, or gdb for <repository>.

I should know that, seeing as how I've complained about it about 10,000
times. Sorry.

However, that last sentence should read:

As a workaround, change the following line in arch/mips/Makefile from:

LINKFLAGS       = -static -N

to:

LINKFLAGS       = -static

Hi,

Compilation is all going well now, and when i boot my new kernel, it
says:

'console is ttyS0' (or ttyS1, that depends on the boot option)

But doesn't do anything with it it seems.

i'm still getting the 'unable to open initial console', which should be
the terminal on the serial port. Is this not supported yet??

Cheers,

Richard

  5.1. NFS booting fails.

Usually the reason for this is that people used unpacked the tar
archive under IRIX, not Linux. Since the representation of device
files over NFS is not standardized between various Unices this fails.
The sympthom is that the system dies with the error message ,,Warning:
unable to open an initial console.'' right after mounting the NFS
  filesystem.

For now the workaround is to use a Linux system (doesn't need to be a
MIPS) to unpack the installation archive onto the NFS server. The NFS
server itself may be any type of UNIX.

The basic difference is between "FullHouse" (Indigo2) and "Guinness"
(Indy). Beyond that, there are smaller differences between Indy and Challenge S.
Challenge S does have an extra SCSI channel, but the configuration is not
identical to Indigo2. (I will look into that later.)

I am still working on an agreement to release more technical information
about a variety of our systems.
