Since I have not received any feedback on my (E)ISA patch, I am going to
assume everyone likes it and will incorporate it into the 2.2 branch on
Monday. I will alos move it over to 2.3 and (if it works) submit that as
well.

Hi,

I tried to install the Red Hat 6.0 by the rules that are given on
http://www.linux.sgi.com/intel, however it did not work out. The first
floppy did not boot properly. After this I followed the suggestion of
booting with larc.exe, however the boot was not succesful.

WIth larc.exe the next messages are displayed :
OSLoadPartition : multi(0)disk(0)fdisk(0)partition(1)
OSLoadFileName : /la2210.vw
OSLOadScript : root=/dev/fd0 load_ramdisk=1

ARC opening multi(0)disk(0)fdisk(0)partition(1)la2210.vw
ARC reading 52 bytes at offset 0

then it read the floppy forever.

My Hardware Inventory :
SGI_ARCx86_mp
dual processor 500 Mhz x86 Family 6, Model 7, STepring 2 (1024 L2 Cache)
Firmware 1.006
Memory 2048 MB
Display Cobalt Graphics
Network Intel 82257
USB Keyboard / Mouse
with Raid QL 4 QL 1080 SCSI 2 - disks

Thanks in advance for any suggestions to install Linux on this system.

Best regards,

Hi!

How can i cause an indy to boot linux automatically, the bootloader
seems to drop that root=/dev/... parameter.
Is there a way to boot without having an irix running? The most unusual
way would be to build a 20mb efs partition for some kernels and mount it
at another sgi, to copy over new kernels, but that won't be the
solutions i'm looking for.
Is there a way to use the sound processor and/or the indycam?

It would be very kind if someone helps me.

regards
Jens Oeser.

I have managed to get my Indigo2s to boot by themselves (actually with the
help of a bootp/tftp server). I modified init/main.c like so:

static struct kernel_param raw_params[] __initdata = {
+ { "OSLoadOptions=", root_dev_setup },
        { "root=", root_dev_setup },

Then, at the boot prom prompt, I typed:

setenv -p OSLoadOptions /dev/sda1

This string is passed by bootp into the loaded kernel and everything boots
up without any user intervention.

Personally, I would like to have a better way to do this, but this works
for me, and I haven't found any drawbacks except needing to add on line to
kernel code.

Hi,

I recently got my (i.e. the company) hands on a second hand O2, and
needless to say the thought of sticking Linux on it came immediatly to
mind...

I've read the status report on the site, and I was wondering if there
exists a more detailed lowdown on the current state of play?

Cheers,

In trying to use remote gdb targets, I came across
a problem with the Indy serial driver. I'm running
2.2.12, but the driver and line discipline code are
unchanged from 2.2.10.

If one turns off output postprocessing via ioctl, or simply
with an stty -opost < /dev/ttyS0, writes to the device
succeed, but the data is never sent. A close of the
device will then hang for a 30 second timeout, but
the data isn't flushed then, either. The line discipline
follows a different code path in the O_POST case
than in the no-opost case, and it looked to me as
if perhaps things were working in the O_POST
case simply because there are more explicit
flushes being performed, as the restart of the
transmitter in ns_write is conditional on a status
that may never be satisfied. I removed that
condition, but this has no effect on the behaviour.

Has anyone else seen this, or better still, fixed it?
It's possible that the bug is in n_tty.c itself, but
as that is generic to all Linux serial ports, I would
be rather surprised if it had not been found and
fixed long ago.

            Regards,

            Kevin K.

Hi,

Here's something to amuse you in the meantime:-

Being an IRIX newbie, more used to RH linux, upon encountering an
install of IRIX 6.3 (and a decidedly stale one at that), I naturally
went about trying to impose order opon the chaos and tried to make the
filesystem layout etc. more like the linux server's. Copious Fear and
Loathing was forthcoming upon discovering than /bin was nothing more
than a symbolic link, and that most of the system utils were in /sbin.
After eventually getting a bash shell onto the box (by ftp'ing onto it
as root, no less), a struggle in itself, I was told by the gee-whizz GUI
sysadmin tool that I wasn't allowed to change root's home directory (a
quick hack of /etc/passwd soon fixed that). Then I thought that it would
be nice to rearrange the system utilities ala linux... no such luck,
those bloody symlinks confused me to the point where I managed to toast
'ls'. Stop and think. How many times in a day do you use 'ls'? Scary
isn't it... the only way to view files now is using the point-and-drool
icon interface.

It get's better though; we don't have any install disks, since we got it
second hand at a dodgy auction, so I had to download a .tardist file
with the utilites (like I did with bash, though it took my a *litle*
while to work out that a tardist was like an rpm). Then of course I
attempted to install, only to discover that the GUI tool and tool that
said GUI tool uses die screaming in the absence of 'ls'... go work it
out, it's not pretty.

So now we've got to (gasp) buy a distribution of IRIX, which costs no
less that 260 UKP, with P+P costing a further 30 UKP... I feel decidedly
withered by the whole experience, so much so that if I had my way I'd
probably install Hard Hat on it, X or no X. Which would almost be a
shame, since the mouse and monitor are rather nice. Well, at least the
keyboard has some decent weight behind it, something of a rarity these
days it seems (Edinburgh Uni have some great, and proper UNIX, keyboard
in some places, you know, keyboards you could wield two-handed as
viscious weapons).

Oh, and Photoshop costs $995 dollars for UNIX <slump>.

Happy hacking,

Rory Hunter

Since Harald's recent changes things don't compile anymore, not even for
an Indy. I'm going to undo them until things are sorted out in a working
manor.

Big mistake :-)

Anyway, just so you (and others) know in case you don't...
You can get a more Linux/FreeBSD friendly env on IRIX by simply
installing all the mandatory GNU utils and other popular free
software stuff for IRIX. This can be done using some cliking
(install via the web) on the site:

	http://freeware.sgi.com/

and finally putting /usr/freeware/bin first in your path.
There's a 'fixpath' script that does this and more for you.
Pretty clean, doesn't interfere with IRIX apps and work
pretty well for thousands of SGI customers.

That's all good and well, except the software that installs
these damn things appears to require 'ls' (since it's usually
a reasonable assumption that it'll be there). I tried to
install the necessary tardist but the program screamed and
died.

I would have expected the installer to be more independant,
in case IRIX newbies (like moi) fuck up so badly.

I still prefer Linux >:))

Yes. Since the standard IRIX installation combines root and /usr,
/bin points to /usr/bin and /usr/bin contains most of the usual
commands (or symlinks to commands) used by non-privileged users.

Rory,

1: a tardist file is justa tared inst distribution.
move it to a directory, cd to directory
tar xvf filename.tardist
then, as root, run the command "inst -f ."
k *
i d
conf
l i
check that it is installing everything you like
go
quit
inst is the command line version of softwaremanager

Personally, I wish Linux would convert to the IRIX filesystem layout.
I prefer IRIX to Linux, but then its going to be a while before the
power of IRIX is available within Linux.

Please let me know if I can give you a hand with your IRIX system. I
strongly suggest at IRIX 6.3 you go get the entire 6.3 recommended
patchset and get it installed yesterday. You will see a great
improvement in how the entire system functions. Take a look at
http://support.sgi.com and click on New Membership if you don't
already have a surfzone ID.

Good Luck!
                    Eric.

Hi all,

1. I didn't mean to sound as if I were advocating one over the other,
sorry
about that (though given half a chance...).

2. Ta for the install advice, should help loads.

3. The whole debacle with the O2 is dodgy from start to finish, it
wasn't
bought new, but rather at auction after a software comapny went bust.
Consequently, we have no backup copies of anything >:)). There's the
possibility that we might buy a dist. of 6.5.5, though it's pretty
steep.
Mind you, if there genuinely is a stand alone installer, I should be
able to get the box back in reasonable shape. Having said that, since
it's
a second hand box, it'd be nice to do a fresh install, whereby I know
that
everything is as it should be.

4. At the risk of offending others (for which I apologise), my personal
belief
is that having /bin as a symbolic link is beyond contempt, IMHO. Ah
well,
I suppose I'll just have to fix it and like it.

Cheers,

Rory Hunter

BTW, anyone have any experience with the Enlightenment SGI install? i.e.
does
it actually work? >:))

Imho the worst problems Linux's filesystem layout has is that it's limiting
various functionality like diskless clients sharing all the their sharable
parts of their filesystems.

IRIX may be powerful but like about every SysV derived UNIX it traded
power against userfriendlyness. Even though imho IRIX is definately
better than it's competition at that point.

hi,

I noticed yesteday that it appears that a partition has been set aside
by the previous owners of my O2 for /proc... assuming that 'df' isn't
lying to me, can anyone think of a reason why an 800Mb partition would
be set aside for /proc?

Cheers,

No, this is not really a partition. See the man page for proc(4). It
provides an image of each active process on the system. It does not
consume any disk resources.

As on Linux, /proc is not a real file system. On IRIX, the size
of /proc is roughly the maximum amount of virtual space available (including
swap space), and the space used is the amount of virtual space in use.

proc is your process table - it isn't taking file system space.
pretent it doesnt exist. Ignore it. Its "kernel stuff"

Hi,

I know the proc is virtual, but it puzzled me that 'df' should list it
when linux doesn't... if I can confirm that the partition itself is
virtual then I'll happliy ignore it.

Cheers,

Rory Hunter

>From the df man page:
The proc filesystem (normally mounted under /proc) is not printed by
default, but can be explicitly specified. This filesystem consumes no
actual disk space, but is an interface to the virtual space of running
processes. The total and free blocks reported represent the total
virtual memory (real memory plus swap space) present and the amount
     currently free, respectively.

You will see /proc if you use GNU df. Otherwise, you have to explicitly
ask for it (df /prof).

If you use IRIX df /proc, you will see that the Type is proc - a
virtual filesystem.

If you want to independently verify it - use prtvtoc to look at
how your disk is partitioned. You will probably not see a /proc
paritition.

Hi,

I tried to install the Red Hat 6.0 by the rules that are given on
http://www.linux.sgi.com/intel
i.com/intel>, however it did not work out. The first
floppy did not boot properly. After this I followed the suggestion of
booting with larc.exe, however the boot was not succesful.

WIth larc.exe the next messages are displayed :
OSLoadPartition : multi(0)disk(0)fdisk(0)partition(1)
OSLoadFileName : /la2210.vw
OSLOadScript : root=/dev/fd0 load_ramdisk=1

ARC opening multi(0)disk(0)fdisk(0)partition(1)la2210.vw
ARC reading 52 bytes at offset 0

then it read the floppy forever.

My Hardware Inventory :
SGI_ARCx86_mp
dual processor 500 Mhz x86 Family 6, Model 7, STepring 2 (1024 L2 Cache)
Firmware 1.006
Memory 2048 MB
Display Cobalt Graphics
Network Intel 82257
USB Keyboard / Mouse
with Raid QL 4 QL 1080 SCSI 2 - disks

Thanks in advance for any suggestions to install Linux on this system.

Best regards,

Zeno Geradts

If you check out the manual pages for proc(4) under IRIX and proc(5)
under Linux (RedHat 6.0), you'll note that the filesystems are two
different things. They are not the same.

/proc under IRIX reports process information. /proc under Linux is
for displaying (and modifying) kernel tunables.

The proc(4) manual page under IRIX specifically states:

The statfs(2) system call will return valid information concerning the
proc filesystem. The total and free blocks as reported by df(1)
respectively represent the total virtual memory (real memory plus swap
     space) available and currently free.

Since the two filesystems perform different functions, 'df' should not
be expected to perform the same function.

Hope this helps.

For those who don't read the CVS mailing list - the CVS now has a fix
for the bug recently reported by Kevin Kissel. Sympthon was that
sending data with O_POST disabled was broken. This broke various
programs like cu or minicom.

Thanks Kevin!

Hello,
On the web page http://www.linux.sgi.com/mips/manhattan/ it mentions the
possibility of the 270MB hardhat-sgi-5.1.tar.gz
file being available on a CD distribution soon.

Is the CD available now and if so, where can I get it ?

Due to legal problems Redhat distributed that CD set for PPC, m68k, MIPS
and Sparc64 under the name ``Rough Cuts'' about a year or so ago.

When attempting to install the Hard Hat distribution made available on
http://www.linux.sgi.com, we ran into the following problem when booting
the kernel:

Freeing unused kernel memory: 44k freed
Page fault from irq handler: 0000
$0: ....
$4: ....
$8: ....
$12: ....
$16: ....
$20: ....

Aiee, killing interrupt handler
Kernel panic: Attempting to kill the idle task
In swapper task - not syncing

We were able to get the system to boot using other kernels from the test
directory on SGI's FTP site. However, when the installation begins, we
were unable to find the correct SCSI controller in the list, and thus
Hard Hat was unable to find a hard drive to install to.

How can we get the original kernel to boot/how can we get newer kernels
to recognize the hard drive so we can install Linux?

Thanks.

Hi I have a few questions about installing Linux on an Indigo system.
First off, I was wondering if anyone has ever attempted this before, if so
please email me about any problems you may have had.
Second, if no one has, could someone suggest anyhting that might come
up durring the process of doing so? Right now my box is running
IRIX 6.2, and I was thinking about getting a second hard drive just
for the linux instalation, does anyone have a better way to dothis?
How well is GL supported in Linux? Will the X server start?

Thanks,
Bob Pielock

You should have no problems getting the HardHat distrobution running on an
Indigo2. You might need to compile your own kernel from the CVS tree; I
am not sure if any of the pre-compiled versions on www.linux.sgi.com have
Indigo2 support in them. However, there is currently no graphics support
for the Indigo2 so you will need to use a serial console for installation.
This also means there is no X support.

I noticed the previous poster mentioning that the Indy2 doesn't have X support yet under Linux. I'm wondering: does linux support for one machine get fully implemented and then tweaked to go to others, or is it a ground-up approach for each new machine in the port list?

Basically, I'm wondering how hard its going to be to take linux over to the O2 once the Indy stuff gets really done.

In that vein, I want linux for my O2 so badly (even just in a command-line configuration) that I'm thinking about trying to help. What are the major obstacles which need overcoming to get the current state of linux-mips to work on an O2?

TIA,

[Disclaimer, I don't use Linux/SGI, and don't know much about the
details].

Concerning X:

Last thing I heard was that a simple SGI/Indy framebuffer was going to
be in XFree86 v4.

The architecture of the O2 and Indy are entirely different (the indy
has a pipeline of graphics chips that do successive transformations),
while the O2 has one big pool of memory that is used as framebuffer,
main memory, texture memory, etc. simultaneously. The architecture is
different, so you can't simply port the Indy X server.

I'm not sure about the O2 port, but it has been asked before. Maybe
you can browse the list archive.

I think he was wondering about indigo boxes not indigo 2 boxes. I know
they aren't supported currently (a shame considering that i have two under
my desk) but are there any plans to support them at all.

I've got some very basic questions regarding Indy's. At work we're
replacing two Indy's, so I figured I could play with them till they have
to be dumped (yes government, can't get them for myself). Both have a 1G
HD. 800MB is used up by IRIX6.2. I am wondering if I could just wipe out
IRIX and use it as a Linux-only system?

I use RedHat 6.0 at home and I was wondering if a newer HardHat release
will become available anywhere in the near future.

SGI Belgium stated they'll ship their Intel systems with SGI Linux
(RedHat + proprietary ad-ons). Will this impact HardHat in any way?

Two issues: X is huge and the architectures are quite different - your talking a *major* serious effort.

REX3 is "Newport", AKA "XL", graphics, which was the default on
Indy and a lower-cost option on Indigo2. Most Indigo2 and some Indy
systems have more complex graphics adapters ("Elan", "Extreme", "XZ", "Impact").

Sorry, thought everyone knew - here is an excerpt from the SGI Hardware FAQ for those who are curious:

  Indy: IP22:
  Express (XZ ["GR3-Elan": 24, Z, 4 GE7, 1 RE3.1]),
  Newport (XL ["NG1": 8|24, soft Z, NG1, REX3])

  Indigo2: IP22:
  Express (XZ ["GR3-Elan": 24, Z, 4 GE7, 1 RE3.1]),
  Newport (XL ["NG1": 8|24, soft Z, NG1, REX3]),
  Newpress (Extreme+XL ["GU1-Extreme": 32 Z]),
  Ultra (Extreme ["GU1-Extreme", 32 Z])

What was the most prevalent graphics configuration on the Indigo2s?

I guess I am missing something - isn't that what this list accomplishes? If you want more detail, you can access the source via anonymous CVS
- you can't follow development any closer than that!

XZ was probably the most common, until Impact was released. On
the Indigo2 R10000, Impact (not on the above list) is probably the
most common.

Dear gurus,

I have an Indy which I set up back in May, running kernel version
2.2.1 (29th March 1999) . Hardhat Release 5.1 distribution.

I've just been looking around on ftp://ftp.linux.sgi.com/pub/ for
a newer version with no success. Can someone tell me where I should
be looking for updates, and also whether there are any packages which
I should also update? I seem to recall a message about binutils
being significantly improved, is there anything else?

The latest version of the mailing list archive stops on July 25: if there
have been any announcements after then, my memory has not been up to the job!

Regards

Pete

I think the current version is 2.2.12. There is also a 2.3, but I don't
recall which revision. They are all available from the CVS archive. Use
the tag "linux_2_2" to get a 2.2 tree. HTH

Could those with write access to the CVS archive please hold their patches
back until I've commited 2.3.18 or send mail them to me? It'll make myself
life easier as I'm currently with several source trees which I have to
merge into a single one. Thanks,

Hi All,

As you may know, the machine www.linux.sgi.com has had an
interesting history: it was originally Larry McVoy's desktop
which he donated for hosting this service and was never
really officially maintained/supported. Then it got
replaced by Bob Mende and we used scraped parts, disk etc.
from various places to keep it going as best as we could...

The time has come to host this service on a more reliable
machine, on a faster link, closer to the backbone, that is
actually officially supported by SGI.

So we intend to migrate the old SGI/linux site to oss.sgi.com.

Of course, we will keep the aliases and virtual hosts
working so this should be mostly transparent but as Ralf
just mentioned we ask that people refrain from checking
stuff in until this process is done. Also: we have had
scores of people who have checked-in stuff long time ago
and never returned so we would like to ask that those who
want to check in new stuff, let Ralf know so he can set
you up for new ssh access.

Any questions comments welcome.

P.S.
And if you see any problems it is _not_ because of any
evil empire or SGI dropping support for Linux :-) but
just because of my ineptitude in doing such things.
I ask for your patience and understanding. Thanks.

Peace, Ariel
