Hello,

we have some problems with code from cross-compiler for MIPS64.
We download sources from cygnus CVS and applied your patch. We had
some problems with compile egcs. We fix it but it generate bad
code => we fix it bad :o((

Could you give us source from which you compiled your egcs cross-
compiler.

Thanks a lot

Luf

I am currently working on a project that is using a MIPS R4x00 core on a=

single board computer and would like to leverage the work the SGI team=20
has done on the MIPS/Linux port. I have downloaded the kernel source=20
code for Hardhat Linux (kernel 2.1.100) and applied the patches (i.e., =
=20
kernel-2.1.100-sgi.patch and kernel-mips-link.patch). I have also=20
downloaded Ralf Bachle's cross compiler tools (486-linux -> MIPS). We=20
are using the little endian version of the tools. I copied the kernel =

files to my home directory under the structure <my_home_dir>\work\linux =
=20
and applied the patches. The patches applied properly. I then did a=20
default configuration, following the file kernel-config.sgi as a=20
template. I built the dependencies ( make CROSS_COMPILE=3Dmipsel-linux-=
=20
dep) and did not get any errors. The problem seems to occur when I=20
attempt to build the compressed image, I enter the command:

I checked the linkage in the linux/include directory and a link exists=20
between asm and mips-asm. For some reason it is not able to find the=20
files located in the include/asm directory, I looked over the gcc man=20
page and read that if a -I is used as a parameter to gcc, it should=20
be the first directory examined in the search patch.....It seems to=20
have problems with the #include <asm/current.h>. Am I missing=20
something? Hmmm....

A second question I would like to ask is concerning the Hardhat=20
distribution, Is this the best starting place to get an embedded=20
version of MIPS/Linux? Is there a better distribution (i.e.=20
Cross-compilation tools, etc., that uses a more current version of the=20
kernel?) Any information available would be greatly appreciated....

Thanks,
Jeff Harrell

Hi:

I got the CVS sources for Kernel (2.3.19) and exactly the
same error messages appears I'm using an HardHat 5.1 with
2.1.100 on a SGI Indy 5000 so maybe it isn't a
cross-compiler error. I also checked the symlinks and seems
ok....
	Any suggestions ?

Thanks.

The sequence of commands are the following:

     cvs -d :pserver:cvs@oss.sgi.com:/cvs login
(Only needed the first time you use anonymous CVS, the password is "cvs")
     cvs -d :pserver:cvs@oss.sgi.com:/cvs co linux

There is more information available in the MIPS-HOWTO.

Are you using gcc or egcs to cross-compiler? If I remember correctly that
message is caused by the gcc specs file that isn't compatible with the current
MIPS kernels. Use this cross-compiler instead:

    ftp://oss.sgi.com/pub/linux/mips/crossdev/i386-linux/mips-linux/

And don't forget to turn off the -N option in arch/mips/Makefiles, or it will
not boot.

Hello guys,

I've attempted to find info on running Linux on an O2 machine, what I
found is that there is no current port.

Say I'd like to have a go for it, however painful it might be, please
give me some pointers, on how to start
with such a port, any info will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
                Marc Esipovich.

	Hi,

At last I managed to install HardHat to my Indy.Everything is nice,
(better than Irix to me :) but I still could not run X.In the
distribution there are two X servers. When I try to run XF86_FBDEV,
	I get the message:
		Configured drivers:
FBDEV: Server for frame buffer device
		(Patchlecel 7): mfb, iplan2p2, iplan2p4, iplan2p8, ilbm,
		afb, cfb8
		Fatal server error:
xf86OpenConsole: Cannot open /dev/fb0current (No such file
		or directory)
And when I try to run the other, X, it says sth like :
'waiting for X server to begin accepting connections...'
which server should I run and how?

	thanx in advance..

Hey all, it's been forever since I've checked up on
the list (I've spent the last year helping code/launch
three huge e-commerce sites, so i've been a bit busy,
heh!)...

What's the current status of the X server? Who is
currently working on the free Xsgi server?

Cheers,

I got the same message when trying to compile the ftape driver on an x86
box.
It's been a long time since I tried it but I do distinctly remember
tracing it to
what you were talking about.

"It seems to have problems with the #include <asm/current.h>."
I'm not sure if your problem is related to mine but could be.

It happened after a kernel upgrade, using RH.

I just checked this in the blue books from AT&T. It defines SHN_MIPS_ACOMMON
(0xff00), SHN_MIPS_SCOMMON (0xff03), SHN_MIPS_SUNDEFINED (0xff04). 0xff01
and 0xff02 are reserved values. I guess the blue books are equivalent to
ABI version 1.0.

The current MIPS ABI 3.0 then defines SHM_MIPS_TEXT as 0xff01 and
SHM_MIPS_DATA as 0xff02 with the following explanation:

Symbols defined relative to these two sections are only present after a
program has been rewritten by the pixie code profiling program. Such
rewritten programs are not ABI-compliant. Symbols defined relative to
these sections will never occur in an ABI-compliant program.

I cc this to the various Linux/MIPS mailing lists. A number of the people
who did work on the MIPS ABI and it's implementations are reading there.
Maybe somebody can bring more light into this, especially the reasons for
this SHN_MIPS_* magic.

Hi !

Who have any technical reference to PMAGB-B card ?

I have DECstatoin 5000/200 with this card, but dont have
any documenation for it. I try switch on-off jumpers on PMAGB-B card.
After this procedure my DECstation go to cycle video test after
power-on. I can not boot from machine.

How solve this problem ?

linux@engr.sgi.com is a mostly SGI-centric list, the DECstation matters
are mostly covered on linux-mips@fnet.fr (see http://lena.fnet.fr).

Well, last I know, Linux/SGI isn't supposed to run on Challenge "S"
machines. Is that true? Anyway, I've got one that a customer has lent
me (it has a bad hard drive, but I'm going to get a new 2 gig to put in
there) and I was wondering if there was anything I could do (as far as
giving out accounts on it if/when I get Linux or IRIX on it) in order to
help the Linux/SGI effort. Thanks!

Mark

I've never tried it, but the Indy kernel should run unmodified on a
Challenge S (which is essentially a "headless" Indy). I've certainly
run Indy's off the serial console. The one tricky bit would be that
for the console serial port to work as the system console, one must
ensure that /dev/console in the root filesystem actually maps to ttyS0.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I have ordered a 3.5 GB Seagate Fast
SCSI-2 hard drive to put in the box and will then try to get it up and
running with IRIX first, then Linux. Is the statement in the FAQ still
correct that you need IRIX in order to boot Linux? Is it sufficient to
have the IRIX installation tools on CD?

Mark

I've managed to bring up a mipsel 2.2.12
kernel using the Red Hat 6.0 root filesystem
from off the SGI web site. I can install the
egcs package, but I also need the development
glibc package to be installed before I can
"go native". That package in turn depends
on the kernel-headers package, which I've
been unable to locate on the web. Do any
of you know where I could find a copy, or
that failing, build/fake one? Forcing the
install by overriding the dependencies
seems to but the rpm database in a
corrupt state - rpm core dumps thereafter
on installation that would otherwise succeed.

No problem, just the correct alignment has to be guaranteed.

Yes. I already did this in my private source for another, MIPS64 related
reason.

In the process of looking through the MIPS/Linux code base, I noticed that the
kgdb interface seems to support the ZS85C30 (see the function rs_kgdb_hook)
but do not see where the generic serial interface (i.e. /drivers/char/serial.c)
is supported. Is the kgdb support provided through the file gdb-stub.c? Any
help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jeff Harrell

The kgdb that comes from ftp.gcom.com:/pub/linux/src provides support for normal
serial ports if that's what you're looking for. You may be able to use that
serial driver with the gdb-stub.c that we have in arch/mips/kernel provided
enough time to get the things together. What are you trying to do?

I am porting the MIPS/Linux version of the Linux kernel to a IDT79S145 evaluation
board. This board has a
IDT64475 (MIPS). I would like to use a standard serial port as a kgdb port. I
will use my other serial port for the
console port. Could you provide any additional information regarding the kgdb
interface? Is kgdb a standalone
application that would need to be built on the host to access a target board or is
it a patch to the kernel files that needs
to built into the kernel running on the host?

Jeff

I plan to commit 2.3.21 into CVS this evening. I do this mostly in order
to keep the 32-bit tree upto sync with Linus. This will also contain a
pile of 64-bit stuff, just not all of it nor be complete. I hope that
some people will take this as inspiration and fold some of the cleanups
back into the 32-bit tree while I continue to fight in the endless [1]
64-bit address space ...

I think kgdb basically is the same thing as gdb-stubs was, they just renamed it
for some reason. There is a program that comes with gdb-stubs that will let you
drop into kgdb over the serial line if you run it on the target. You don't need
anything else than gdb to actually run the stuff once the kernel on the target
machine is in the kgdb mode. If you get a kernel fault, it will automatically
drop into kgdb. Read the patch and you'll see.

Scott Lurndal is currently working on support for kdb on MIPS, and that will
make things a bit easier when it's working. Do not exchange kgdb and kdb, they
are two different things :-).

Hello everybody,

I've read in SGI/howto that this is list for SGI based computers, so
sorry about this quite off-topic letter, but I'm really desperate.

I'm very interested in setting up Linux on SNI RM200. I have RM200 in my
office and I want to see Linux running on it, but my knowledge about this
subject is quite limited. I have no one to learn from. I mean there are
lot of peoples in mailing lists who are willing to help me, but nobody
owns this particular hardware, so the hints I get are quite general. Is
out there someone who is able to provide me some information on Linux on
RMs? Or on someone who does this?

I've hopefully compiled both binutils and egcs for cross-devel, now I'm
ready for kernel. I've tried mips patched 2.2.1 found on
decstation.unix-ag.org but althought it's said to support RMs, I'm unable
to get over rm200-pci part of compilation. If I disable the support for
RM200 PCI, which is nonsense, but just to see what is going on, I get
various linker errors:

I'm fighting with this all for nearly two weeks...

I'm willing to learn to hack the RM specific code and to try to do lot of
things by myself, but right now, I'm not even able to compile the kernel!

Thanks you all for any info

Radim

No, RM200 is a mips 4600 based computer with PCI and EISA buses, little
endian, developed by Siemens Nixdorf. It used to be officially supported
in old MIPS kernels, now it seems to be broken.

Hi,

I'm thinkin' about buying and SGI Indigo2 to port
Stampede Linux there (www.stampede.org).

I have an offer of a Indigo2 with the following hardware:

Indigo2
R44K @ 150
64 MB
ZX Graphics
2 G HDD
Floorstands
Converter Cable from 13W3 -> 15 pin VGA

I also have a Monitor which supports the sync on green stuff.

My question: Is it possible to run MIPS Linux on this system, and if,
what problems are remaining ?

		TIA Klaus

This is a minor braino in proc.c. Just enable procfs support and recompile.

Sorry for not answering your emails earlier, I've been busy with hacking
the MIPS64 code. The RM200 support got broken by the changes to the ARC
code above and a minor procfs dumbne

Fixing would actually be easy ... IF SNI's firmware wouldn't use the
freedom granted by the ARC spec and ignore the load address of every
executable. As it seems every executable gets loaded to the load address
plus 8 bytes. The simplest fix it looks like would be to write some
relocatable code directly at the start of the kernel binary which moves
everything around to the right place.

The other SNI bug which I've reported some time ago to this list, the
interrupt system dying seems to be fixed. It is caused by an interupt
hardware foobar. SNI pointed out a workaround and that one seems to
be stable in 2.1.131 for me, I've done my entire Linux/MIPS64 work using
the RM200 as the console for my Origin.

More later ...

SCSI reset is due to repeated attempts to read a block, or I might be
wrong and it it's due to a malfunction of the controller on your HD.

Get some newer hardware, I'd suggest running the 'badblocks' utility.

If there is a scsi error before the ext2fs error then yes probably so
You are looking for a "media error" probably.

You can get it off some working sane hardware if you try and ask for stupid
block numbers. It is worth doing a full fsck on the drive before assuming
hardware. Also check the cabling seems sound and is well attached and that
parity is enabled on the controller if the bios sets it.
