Cheap Hotels in Brisbane 2026: Budget Stays Guide by Area

Cheap and budget hotels in Brisbane, area by area, with exact distances, A$0.50 fares, event dates and honest trade-offs for first-time visitors.

Brisbane has a reputation problem that cuts two ways. Visitors write it off as an overgrown country town that exists to funnel you to the Gold Coast. They also assume a cheap bed here means a long, lonely trip home from anywhere worth seeing. Neither idea survives the facts. Greater Brisbane has 2,833,524 residents and is Australia's third-largest city. It is safe for visitors by international standards. Every Translink bus, train, ferry and Metro trip costs a flat A$0.50 (Airtrain excluded).

I'm Joe Gibson, a former department-store window dresser from Seattle. I read cities the way I once read a shopfront: what is the focal point, and what does it really cost to stand in front of it? I plotted every budget stay below against the map. My conclusion is that Brisbane is far more accessible than its reputation, and the savings are epic if you pick the right area. This guide covers the sights, events and tours first, then the budget base that suits each.

Money and Fares: The Real Cost of a Cheap Bed

The question shoppers asked me most at the window was 'is it cheaper inside?' With hotels the answer depends on what getting around costs, and Brisbane makes that sum kind.

  • A$0.50 flat fare on every Translink bus, train, Metro, ferry and tram, however far you go. Tap on and off with a contactless Visa or Mastercard.
  • Airtrain to the airport is not covered and charges its own fare.
  • From 1 October 2026, shops cannot surcharge eftpos, Mastercard or Visa. Prices include 10% GST, and tipping is optional.

How Brisbane Is Put Together: Reading the Map Before You Book

Read the city like a window display: one focal point, everything arranged around it. That focal point is a 2.2 km2 CBD in a river bend. Its streets are named for the House of Hanover, with queens (Queen, Adelaide, Elizabeth, Charlotte, Mary, Margaret, Alice, Ann) running one way and kings (George, Albert, Edward, William) the other. Most people walk past that grid. Read it on a Sunday morning, when the CBD is quiet.

Budget stays sit on the outer ring, from within 6 km of Queen Street Mall (Annerley) to about 22 km out (Inala). My verdict: the outer ring costs you commute time, not safety. Ask Visit Brisbane (visit.brisbane.qld.au) for road-works and event notes covering your dates.

South Side: The Gabba, UQ and Annerley

The Gabba in Woolloongabba anchors the south side. José Carreras and Friends plays there on 5 December 2026 (gates 5:00 pm, with Robbie Williams, The Corrs, Ronan Keating and the Queensland Symphony Orchestra billed). England play Australia in a T20 International on 27 November 2026, and the Lions play home games from March. There is no men's Test this summer.

Further out, the University of Queensland's Great Court has the detail most people walk past: Helidon sandstone carved with grotesques of academics. Go in the summer break, when it is quiet. Ask Visit Brisbane which Gabba nights bring road closures.

  • Nightcap At Chardons Corner Hotel

Stay here for the south side. You give up a CBD front door and gain a quieter Annerley base. The property has 19 recently renovated rooms, each with an ensuite, desk and flat-screen TV, and some with a kitchenette (microwave, toaster, fridge).

    • Within 3 km of UQ St Lucia
    • 3.8 km to the Gabba
    • Within 6 km of South Bank Parklands, City Botanic Gardens, Queen Street Mall and Brisbane Powerhouse
    • 17 km to Brisbane Airport

You also get free parking, free Wi-Fi, tea and coffee makers in every room and an on-site bar. My favourite budget pick for first-timers: cheap hotels in Brisbane.

The River Core: South Bank, Galleries and Cruises

The best-value day here is free. Streets Beach at South Bank is lifeguard-patrolled all year. QAGOMA's collection displays cost nothing, and GOMA's ticketed Jim Henson exhibition runs until 18 April 2027. From the Cultural Centre Public Pontoon, the Brisbane Morning Tea River Cruise is 1.5 hours with a guide (4.6/5, 401 reviews). The River Cruise and Koala Sanctuary Admission adds about three hours at Lone Pine (4.8/5, 217 reviews). Koala holding ended there on 1 July 2024, so book for close-up encounters, not a cuddle. A CityCat ride costs A$0.50.

Story Bridge and Howard Smith Wharves

The Story Bridge, opened on 6 July 1940, is Australia's longest cantilever bridge. The detail Brisbanites know and visitors miss is the rhythmic 'ba-dum' of its deck joints, best heard from the footpath. The Story Bridge Adventure Climb (4.8/5, 136 reviews) offers dawn, day, twilight and night climbs of about 90 minutes from Howard Smith Wharves. It calls itself the world's first fully accessible bridge climb. Afterwards, try Felons Brewing Co. or walk the Riverwalk, about 1 km to New Farm Park. The bridge closes to all traffic from 27 December 2026 to 18 January 2027, though the eastern footpath stays open.

Stadium Weeks: Tennis, Rugby and the Ekka

Brisbane's event calendar decides how much a bed costs, so plan around it. The Brisbane International tennis runs 3-10 January 2027 at the Queensland Tennis Centre in Tennyson. Suncorp Stadium hosts the Rugby League World Cup finals double-header on 15 November 2026 and ten Rugby World Cup matches from 2 to 31 October 2027. The Ekka fills the Brisbane Showgrounds at Bowen Hills from 7 to 15 August 2027, with a Brisbane-only public holiday on Wednesday 11 August. In those weeks a cheap base earns its keep.

  • Holland Park Motel

Stay here if you have a car and want space. You trade river views and walkability for easy stadium drives.

    • 15 minutes' drive to the Gabba and Suncorp Stadium
    • 20 minutes' drive to the Queensland Tennis Centre, RNA Showgrounds, UQ St Lucia and Southbank Parklands
    • 16 km to Brisbane Airport

Air-conditioned private rooms have a sofa, flat-screen TV, dining setting and tea and coffee makers. There is also a self-contained apartment offsite at Greenslopes with a fully equipped kitchen. The motel has an outdoor pool, family rooms, laundry, free parking and free Wi-Fi. See it on Booking.com ↗

City Hall, Queen Street Mall and Heritage Walks

Brisbane City Hall, completed in 1930, offers free guided tours. A restored cage lift climbs to the 87.5 m clock tower, but numbers are limited, so collect a timed ticket on arrival. Level 3 holds the Museum of Brisbane. Queen Street Mall runs about 500 m with more than 700 shops. The detail to slow down for is the timber shopfronts of Brisbane Arcade (1923-24). Visit early, before the crowds. Friday is late-night shopping in the CBD.

From King George Square, the Haunted Brisbane CBD Ghost Tour (4.5/5, 90 reviews) leaves after dark. The XXXX Brewery guided tour runs 90 minutes (4.5/5, 151 reviews).

North Side: Wetlands, Showgrounds and the Airport Run

The north side's best cheap pleasure is the Boondall Wetlands. More than 1,100 hectares of Moreton Bay shoreline, Ramsar-listed in 1993, they have boardwalks, bird hides and a bikeway. Nudgee Beach next door is the closest beach to the CBD. It is a muddy, mangrove-fringed bay for walks and fishing, not swimming. Big concerts and the NBL's Brisbane Bullets play at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre at Boondall. Bridge to Brisbane's 10 km and 5 km runs finish at the Showgrounds in Bowen Hills. My verdict: a tidy, calm side of town that most visitors never see.

  • Comfort Inn North Brisbane

Stay here for the northern suburbs and airport runs. You give up walkability and gain a pool, a garden and parking. The inn, formerly Carseldine Palms Motel, has a terrace, restaurant and breakfast.

    • 6 km to Brisbane Entertainment Centre
    • 11 km to RNA Showgrounds and Brisbane Airport
    • 13 km to Suncorp Stadium, Story Bridge and Queen Street Mall

Rooms have a microwave, smart TV, kettle and private bathroom. Facilities include an outdoor pool, free parking, free Wi-Fi, family rooms, laundry and facilities for disabled guests. Room details ->

Gig Nights: The Valley, Riverstage and Getting Home

Most gigs are across town. The Tivoli (52 Costin St), Fortitude Music Hall (312-318 Brunswick St) and The Triffid in Newstead cover the Valley circuit. Courtney Barnett plays the Tivoli on 4 November. Death Cab for Cutie plays Fortitude on 15 November, Wolf Alice on 2 December and The Sisters of Mercy at the Tivoli on 3 December. These are over-18 shows: no ID, no entry, no refund. Comedy runs at the Princess Theatre (8 Annerley Rd), with Des Bishop on 5 November.

Riverstage (59 Gardens Point Road) hosts 5 Seconds of Summer on 28 October, Jack Johnson on 6 November and A Perfect Circle on 8 December. It has no on-site parking. The Metro runs 24 hours on weekends.

Inala and the South-West: Vietnamese Food on a Budget

Many locals rate Brisbane's best Asian food outside Chinatown. Inala, 22 km south-west of the GPO, has the city's largest Vietnamese community, with pho, bun bo Hue and banh mi, and neighbouring Darra adds more. Sunnybank, about 15 km south of the CBD, is the Chinese and Taiwanese hub. Its Market Square on Mains Road is packed with dumpling houses and bubble-tea bars. Take the Beenleigh line train to Sunnybank. Inala is spread out, so use a bus or car. Go hungry and at weekend lunchtime. I'd rather eat well here than pay CBD prices for an average meal.

  • Inala Hotel

Stay here for Inala's Vietnamese food. You trade every big sight for a quiet suburban base on the corner of Rudd Street and Freeman Road, 29 km from Brisbane Airport.

Rooms are air-conditioned with carpeted floors, a private bathroom, TV, electric kettle, microwave and free toiletries. A ground-floor unit has a walk-in shower and wardrobe. Daily housekeeping, free Wi-Fi, free parking and non-smoking rooms are standard. Guests praise the attentive staff, the comfortable rooms and the location. Read reviews on Tripadvisor ↗

Day Trips from a Budget Base

Tours collect you from central stops, so an outer base costs only the A$0.50 ride in. The Springbrook and Tamborine Rainforest Tour (maximum 21; 4.6/5, 153 reviews) includes Natural Bridge and the glow-worm caves. The North Stradbroke Island Wildlife Adventure (maximum 11; 4.7/5, 209 reviews) walks the Gorge Walk, and humpbacks pass June to October. Byron Bay (4.8/5, 117 reviews) is a long day, and New South Wales runs an hour ahead of Brisbane from October to April. Best months are April-May and August-October. Storms peak from October to March: never drive into floodwater. See Queensland hotels and motels for stays beyond the city.

Verdict and Final Pointers

My verdict, after matching every stay to the map: Brisbane is more accessible and rewarding than its reputation, and a budget base trades time for money, not safety for money. Choose by plan: the south side for South Bank, UQ and the Gabba; the stadium side if you drive; the north for the airport run and wetlands; the south-west for food.

  • Book early for the Ekka (7-15 August 2027), Riverfire (4 September 2027) and October 2027 rugby.
  • Emergencies: 000. Storm and flood help: SES 132 500.
  • Prices and availability can change, so confirm when booking, and browse all Brisbane stays.
